That 80's Hair Band at the Reservior. Doesn't sound too appetizing does it? I wasn't looking for heavy metal madness from That 80's Hair Band's set. Tribute bands are supposed to be guys in polo shirts playing their favorite tunes with their special 'sauce'. That 80's Hair Band What I saw was a professional accurate presentation of 80's hair band music that I thought I'd forgotten how to enjoy. Reflecting on the performance I was impressed with the smoke machine, the full hair band getup of the band and their accurate lick-by-lick musicianship.  I never knew that I actually would miss the Still of the Night by Whitesnake or Home Sweet Home by Motley Crue played live. Sometimes I cringe upon hearing old fashion guitar shredding and drum solos. But on Friday at the Reservoir it was 80's hair band free-for-all night.

That 80's Hair Band is fronted by Rob Neubauer, Jason Neubauer (yes they are brothers) and Brad Peace on the guitars, Chris Daley on Bass guitar and Johnny Magnum on drums. Playing heavy metal is not on most musicians' lists of top 10 projects to be a part of therefore it was difficult to find musicians' with the same heavy metal vision. They formed just a few months ago by Rob after an exhaustive search to find musicians who wanted to capture the wild side of rock and roll. After rehearsing for two months they went out gigging and found the Reservoir, the new home of Buffalo Heavy Metal. Although the goals of being in a heavy metal band are still the same, girls, girls and more girls they have invested their time and money to make a professional show with lights, smoke machines and an authentic sound. To quote Rob, 'We really want everyone to be entertained because when it comes right down to it that's our job, to make sure everyone has a great time!!'

Yes, I must admit that I played my air guitar with the band on Friday. What made the show extra special is that Rob allows the audience to sing the chorus of their favorite tunes. Rob hangs the mic over the crowd like a boom mike to let audience participate in the celebration. You might be surprised how at the demographics of the audience. I assumed guys with mullets, but I surprised a whole mixture in the crowd coming out of the heavy metal closet. If you need a break from the Chippewa club scene and are willing to admit you like some heavy metal, then That 80's Hair Band will drive home the point that listening to heavy metal can still be fun, watching live can save your usual night downtown.
